Overview: Database Table

Use this operation to import a dataset by connecting to a OLE DB or ODBC provider data source and selecting the database where the tables are listed. You can select to either generate a query which will enable you to import all the fields and rows selected, or you can enter your own query, allowing control over what columns and/or rows are imported.

Properties

Category:

Import

Performance risk:

Potential high performance risk. The performance is influenced by the size of the text file being imported, which is determined by number of rows and/or the number of columns of the dataset.

Knowledge required:

None

Effect on datasets

How many datasets are required to perform this operation?

N/A

Does it create a new dataset?

Yes

Can you reconfigure this operation?

Yes

Can you apply this operation to a locked dataset?

N/A

Does it modify the current dataset in any way?

N/A

Requirements

  • Connection to a data source and configuring the following security permissions:

    • Server name: the name of the SQL server

    • Access file: the name of the file where the Access database is saved.

    • Login: select to use either Windows authentication or server authentication, which will prompt you to enter a username and password

    • Database: select one of the listed databases from the drop down menu.

When you read data from a table that contains a DATETIME2 field, you must use the “SQL Server Native Client” OLE DB provider for it to be recognized as a timestamp field. The “Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server” and “… for ODBC Drivers” will not work (not support by Microsoft) and will recognize DATETIME2 as a string.

Results

  • The table from the selected database will be imported as a dataset. The columns will depend on the selected SQL query used to import the fields and rows.
